Episode 76 | When to Take Your Non-compete Seriously

Question

Hey Work Wives, this is Edith from Cambridge, Massachusetts. I need some help with a non-compete I signed at my current job. It says that I need to notify them in writing if I’m looking for a position within the same industry. I’ve been interviewing and got a verbal offer from another company. (Yay!) The new company is not a direct competitor but it is in the same industry. Do I tell my current employer now or wait until I have an official offer in writing? Thanks!

Summary

Oh no! You’re trying to leave your company but your non-compete says you can’t even interview without letting them know.

First of all, that’s bullsh*t. Second of all, most non-competes are. And third of all, there are actually things in your contract you need to watch out for.

So take the interview and sign the offer letter, but do make sure you know what you’re signing.
