Episode 160 | Keep or Kill: Right-Sizing

Question

Hey, Work Wives! It's Avery from Chicago, and I think I'm watching a disaster happen, and I just need to know if, like, I'm crazy, or what's happening in front of me is the crazy. Um, so, I have a colleague who, you know, we're kind-of both managers. I'm a little more senior than she is, but like, functionally, we're about the same. And she went and asked a VP of a brand that's not ours a question about, like, how Slack is going to continue after some org changes that's going on. This is not the VP of Technology, this is not the VP of Ops who might know this. This is the VP of a different brand. And just like, casually asked him, like, "How is Slack working after the reorg?" And he just looked at her like, are you an idiot? Anyway, I was copied on an email later where like, this VP did actually reply with an answer. Which means that VP went and found the answer, which I don't think is that person's job. So like, I just, I'm like, I, I don't know, because I mean, I respect that VP. I'd love to work for him. Like, it's a great brand. But I'm like, why was she even asking that question to that VP? It doesn't seem like a fit, but it still got done. But I can't imagine... Like, that VP has got to be worth a few hundred dollars an hour. And even if this took a couple hours, right? That's suddenly, like, how, how Slack is going to work after a reorg is a $400 question? I don't think so. So I just, like... Again, am I, am I being, like, super judgmental? Or is this really not how it's supposed to work? Please let me know.

Summary

“I’ll take ‘Corporate Jargon’ for $800, Alex.” (But seriously: what is “right-sizing”? And should we right-size?)
