Episode 141 | Gatekeeping: A False Sense of Job Security
Question
Work Wives, it's Jenny. I'm having a small crisis and I hope you can help. I've just been promoted to Senior Ops Manager and been given a lot of big processes. This role kind of sits at an intersection of some major departments. It's a job I've been stretching into for a while and finally got the official title.
My problem is this: now that I have the visibility that comes with the title, I feel so paranoid, all the time. People are now asking me how I do things, my specific technique for getting all these processes to run smoothly, and how the departments are working together, and I, I really don't want to share it. It feels like they're going to take my own ideas and use them to take my job. Is this real or am I crazy?
Summary
Gatekeeping might seem like a surefire way to keep your job. After all — if you’re the only one that can do it, they’ll never get rid of you, right? Maybe. But who wants that?
