Episode 174 | Choose Your (Maternity Leave) Adventure

Question

Hey Work Wives, this is Katie from Austin. I have a question about maternity leave. For context about me, my first child is due to arrive in a month. I do get maternity leave for three months, thankfully, and I’m really grateful for that benefit. I do recognize that that’s a privilege of getting any paid time off, 100 percent. But I'm also considering how to potentially negotiate a longer leave with my employer, or whether taking gap time would even make sense. All that said, I have heard research that proved the largest wage gaps are between mothers and everyone else. And of course, that gets worse when you begin to add minority markers to statistics. Would I take a detrimental hit to my career and my salary growth with an extended maternity leave? If either of you have children, or have heard from families with kids, what is advice would you share on how to balance family with career?

Summary

a.k.a. what to expect (from Corporate America) when you're expecting.
