Episode 155 | Make Corporate America Work for You

Question

Hey Work Wives, it's Chelsea from Houston. Here's what happened: my company's recently been purchased, or we've been told it's getting purchased, and some people from our team got taken into the purchasing company and some people are facing a layoff. I have about a three- or four-month ramp and I'm not one of those people who got taken into the new company, so basically I have a heads-up on a layoff.

What this is forcing me to do is like, look at my resume. The acquiring company has brought in career coaches, and the severance is great, but it's just forcing me to look at like the last couple of years that I've been at this company, and I'm just realizing like I didn't really end up doing anything that was like in my career path.

When I started at this company it was, the job description was like the next step that I, you know, that I saw my career, and I thought it was awesome. But looking back on that, I don't know how I got so sidelined. I don't know what happened, but I feel like I've started a whole new career path and I'm, I'm trying to figure out how to like, you know, in my next job, get back on track, you know?

So I'm, I'm hoping you guys have some thoughts on this, like kind of answering the question, how did I get here? And then how do I get back on track?

Summary

There are two types of people in Corporate America: people who make the company work for them; and people who work for the company. Which one are you?
